Leaf Peeping 2022: Where to See Fall Colors & Changing Aspens

Includes Interactive Map of Aspens, Scenic Drives Close to Denver

By Julie Dikken, Publisher of Evergreen & Arvada Macaroni Kid November 1, 2022

This time of year our Colorado mountains are sprinkled with aspen groves showing off their changing colors against a blue sky backdrop. It's a family tradition to load up the car and "head to the hills" to take in the sights, but you don't need to travel far to find the best fall colors. This year, try taking a different route, one closer to Conifer, Bailey or Pine and you will find some of the prettiest views Colorado has to offer -- with much less time in traffic.

Aspens in our area tend to peak mid-September. To help you make the most out of your aspen viewing, Macaroni KID has put together this helpful guide that includes insight on where to find less crowded, hidden viewing spots, hikes, drives.

On your way, don't forget to stop at the local businesses. You will find great paces for a meal, a beverage, unique and fun shops and even live music to enjoy! Please be sure to visit Goconifer.com for up to date information on local businesses in the area!

Aspen Update - Local Inside Scoop

Although I think we are getting to the end of the best viewing for the Evergreen, Bailey & Conifer areas, it is still beautiful to visit our mountain communities! When you visit, be sure to stop at our local businesses along the way!

Viewing Tips for the Conifer, Bailey, Pine Areas
Use the interactive map to find changing colors without traveling far. Below is how to make the most of the map.

Where to Find Fall Colors & Changing Aspens in Conifer, Bailey, Pine Colorado

This icon indicates where to look for fall colors. Please note that locations are an estimate and gathered from google maps and a lot of driving around. (I thoroughly enjoyed that part of my research!)

Please keep in mind that many groves are located on private property. Do not trespass. Viewing for these locations is best from roads or trails. When driving through our mountain roads, keep in mind that our neighbors love to spend time outdoors. Please watch for cyclists, motorcycles, hikers, pets and pedestrians. View safely!

Hiking Trails: Walk Amongst the Aspens

Hitting our local trails is the perfect way to get "up close and personal" with the changing aspens. There is no better way to celebrate fall than making your way on a trail under the colorful canopy of aspens overhead, while stepping on the "gold coins" of leaves fallen to the earth. Aspens make an amazing backdrop for family photos as well.

Click on the trail marker on the map for more details about each hike. Each hike is linked to its specific website, giving full details of the trail.

Take A Drive Off the Beaten Path

Driving up Highway 285 to Kenosha Pass or over Guanella are the drives most Coloradans head to for aspen views -- you can tell by the traffic every weekend. We're letting you in on a local secret. We have beautiful mountains flocked with colorful aspens right here in Conifer, Bailey and Pine. We've mapped out some of our favorite drives that can be made without requiring 4wd. These routes will have aspens along the way as well as views on the mountains in the distance.

Enjoy respectfully! Remember, these routes are our neighborhoods. When driving through our community, keep in mind that our neighbors love to spend time outdoors. Please watch for cyclists, motorcycles, hikers, pets and pedestrians. Pay attention to speed limits and do not trespass. If you want to get out amongst the aspens, find the nearest public hiking trail. We have plenty listed above!

 Pro Tip

As a resident of the 285 Corridor, I have an insider tip to share. Weekends, including Friday afternoons/evenings are very busy along highway 285. If you are able to schedule your tour mid-week, you will enjoy less traffic and crowds with your spectacular view. If you do make the trip on the weekend, stopping at local businesses to enjoy meals, live music and shopping will help break up the time you do spend in traffic. Trying our alternate drive ideas will help too. Don't forget to check out the deals & discounts listed below!

When visiting events and local businesses, be sure to tell them Macaroni KID sent you... and don't forget to tell all your friends!
