Why “Water Safe” Isn’t Black and White

How Kids Actually Become Safer Swimmers

By Adam Berling, Owner (Swimplify, LLC) October 15, 2025

Most parents think of “water safety” as a finish line — something their child reaches once they can swim on their own. But in reality, water safety is a continuum, not a checkbox. At Swimplify, we’ve seen hundreds of children move through the stages of becoming water safer — from fear and hesitation to calm confidence and real skill — and the truth is, each step matters just as much as the last.

Comfort comes before confidence

The first thing a child learns in the pool isn’t technique — it’s trust. They’re learning that water can feel safe, that their instructor will guide them, and that their body is capable of floating, breathing, and moving in new ways. This emotional foundation is what allows learning to take root later.

Confidence creates opportunity

Once a child feels emotionally secure, real progress begins. You’ll see moments of bravery — a longer float, a deeper breath, a first kick without holding the wall. Each act of confidence unlocks the next layer of physical skill. In our lessons, we call this functional confidence — the bridge between comfort and competence.

Why progress happens faster at Swimplify

Children learn best when their emotional, physical, and neurological readiness align — what we call the Three-Channel Readiness Model (3CRM). When all three “channels” are open, the brain and body can absorb new movement patterns almost instantly.

Instead of pushing repetition, our instructors recognize what each swimmer is ready for that day — adjusting tone, pace, and challenge to keep all three channels open. This precision is why so many new swimmers reach the “water safe” milestone within just one to two eight-week sessions, even if they begin hesitant or fearful.

Competence makes them truly water safer

By the time your child can float independently, roll for air, and swim short distances confidently, they’re not “drown-proof” — no one is — but they’ve reached the point on the Water Safety Continuum where the likelihood of danger decreases dramatically. From there, technique and endurance can be built safely and joyfully.

At Swimplify, our goal isn’t just to teach strokes. It’s to help every child progress through these stages at their own pace — emotionally, physically, and neurologically. When learning is rooted in trust, progress happens faster than most parents expect. Kids don’t just learn to swim. They learn to believe in themselves.

Reviews:

Swimplify is hands-down the absolute best swim school there is out there! We have had the honor of working with Coach Paul. He has met both of our swimmers where they are at, but has also challenged them to grow in their swim skills. He creates such a welcoming environment as he is so calm, patient, and encouraging. We are forever grateful we found such an exceptional company that we can trust and invest in! We highly recommend them!!

My four-year-old granddaughter started swim lessons about three weeks ago with Swimplify, and it’s hands down the best decision we’ve made for her water safety. This is a child who was once terrified to get her face wet; now she’s like a little fish!

Coach Paul has been absolutely amazing. He’s so patient and has wonderful techniques for reengaging her whenever her four-year-old brain gets distracted. Our original goal was just to help her feel a little more comfortable in the water before our Hawaii trip, but she has completely exceeded our expectations.

She now asks daily if “today is her swim lesson with Coach Paul,” and she’s genuinely disappointed when it’s not a lesson day. The joy and confidence she’s gained in such a short time is incredible.

This team is worth every penny, and I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants their little ones to gain confidence in the water while keeping water safety as the main priority.

This is our third summer attending Swimplify swimming lessons, and it has been the best experience! My child has gained confidence in his swimming skills and himself. While my child is now water safe, we continue to invest and learn more strokes and techniques as he enjoys the lessons so much.

He's had lessons with Adam and Ixchel. Both of these instructors have a quiet, calm presence and break down each skill into smaller chunks as the child gains ability and confidence. They have positive and encouraging attitudes. With each lesson, my child has a clear understanding of the skills he needs to practice to grow in his swimming abilities. The lessons have helped my child move farther and faster than any we have taken at the rec centers.

I cannot fully express the difference Adam has made with BOTH our 1.5 and 4.5 year old. Our daughter is learning water confidence and safety and has been comfortable in 1:1 lessons from her second lesson. Our son went from being hesitant with water on his face to jumping in, floating on his own, working on diving to the bottom, breathe work and finally swimming with full arm strokes - all in 6 lessons! Adam is not only a fantastic instructor who really connects with each kid, he is upfront about pricing and very professional and proactive. We absolutely plan to continue lessons and are recommend him to anyone looking for effective lessons. Worth every penny!
