Ovation West Theatre Company presents The Wizard of Oz, a musical retelling of everyone’s favorite classic movie. Taking place at Center Stage in Evergreen beginning March 15 and running Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through April 7, 2024, audiences will follow Dorothy down the yellow brick road and beyond!
Most of us are familiar with the movie, starring Judy Garland as Dorthy, a Kansas farm girl and her pet dog Toto who are swept away from their home by a cyclone to the magical Land of Oz. The 1939 film was nominated for six Academy Awards and introduced audiences worldwide to technicolor (although it was not the first film to use color) The Wizard of Oz was originally published in 1900 by L. Frank Baum. Two years later in 1902, the musical Wizard of Oz opened in Chicago, before moving to the Majestic Theatre on Broadway in January 1903, where it ran for 293 performances. To get audiences excited about the musical, Ovation West will also showcase the movie during its Free Cinema Series on March 7, 2024.
Directed by Tim Kennedy, who has helmed several productions for Ovation West including Funny Girl, Hunchback of Notre Dame, My Fair Lady, Chicago, and Kiss Me Kate, Ovation West’s production stars an incredible ensemble cast, features colorful costumes and magical stage elements!
Like L. Frank Baum said about the story, the musical "aspires to be a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heart-aches and nightmares are left out."
