As the summer comes to a close and our patients get ready to go back to school, our team reflects not only on the importance of learning, but also on the importance of teaching. At Evergreen Orthodontic Specialists, our office is constantly reinventing ways of teaching our patients about their treatment, what we are trying to achieve and how to take care of their teeth during and after treatment. Some patients are visual learners, so we send home handouts. Some patients are audio learners, so we take extra time to talk. Some patients are tactile learners, so we allow more time to demonstrate.
Getting back to basics and how we each learn best allows each patient to be successful. So in an attempt to get back to the basics, we thought we would share some basic toothbrush facts as reported in an article from HGTV magazine, guided by the American Dental Association.
- Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months, sooner if bristles are frayed.
- After using your toothbrush, rinse it out and let it dry
- A toothbrush with soft nylon bristles is the best choice, particularly if you are a vigorous brusher. Medium and hard bristle brushes can damage tooth enamel and gums.
- We tend to spend more time brushing the teeth we hit first, short changing the ones we get to last. Try starting in a different section each time you brush. Spend at least two minute on your entire mouth.
The toothbrush is a tool we all begin with to keep our teeth healthy. We all need to allow time every day to use it properly. And as we jump into another busy school year of activities, responsibilities, obligations, appointments and meetings, remember that you too need to allow time for yourself everyday.
