Evergreen's Premiere Children's Chorale Celebrates Thirty Years

By Evergreen Children's Chorale July 13, 2021

The Evergreen Children’s Chorale is celebrating 30 years of kids making music in the mountains. Over the three decades, 650 students from 2nd-8th grade have participated and provided over a thousand performances for the foothills community. The ECC’s premier concert in June 1991 was titled “Kids Take Center Stage”. From that point on it has performed many other great musical classics such as Pirates of Penzance, Annie, Once Upon a Mattress, Wizard of Oz, School of Rock, Beauty and the Beast and numerous other successful productions in addition to the traditional holiday choir concerts during the first weekend of December.

The Evergreen Children’s Chorale was formed upon the successful completion of an SCFD (Scientific and Cultural Facilities District) grant written by Jenise Harper. Jenise and others from the community recognized a need in the mountain area for a high-quality music performance ensemble specifically designed for children. The developmental group, Prelude, was formed in September 1997 as a smaller ensemble designed to prepare young voices for the rigorous demands and expectations of ECC. The longevity of the chorale can be attributed to SCFD and dozens of generous supporters from the community, its dedicated artistic staff and the children themselves, whose talents, spirit and drive elevate ECC's stature as a model children's chorale.

Lindy Casados, the Evergreen Children’s Chorale’s Artistic Director, has been part of the staff since 1997. Prelude’s Music Director Lisa Cole has been with ECC for 15 years and ECC’s resident choreographer, stage director and set designer Gail Montgomery has been involved with ECC since 2014. ECC is currently hiring for an Assistant Music Director to join the team starting in August 2021.

“When I joined the organization in 2018 I was immediately impressed by the quality of the music education, the professional musicians that accompany the productions, and the commitment of the members to create something really special.” said ECC’s Business Manager, Kristin Courington.

This Spring, ECC celebrated their 30th anniversary with "You Can’t Stop The Beat,” a concert which featured songs from broadway shows and feel good favorites from the past 30 years of concerts and musicals. Thirteen ECC alumni joined in the Sunday performance as special guests. The celebration will continue throughout the summer as ECC members make appearances at events around town and in a drama camp partnership with the Evergreen Players.

“My favorite thing about ECC is the passion of the directors and kindness of the kids. They really become like a family and it shows in the productions,” said one ECC alum parent.

Auditions are held in mid-August for new members in 2nd-8th grade to join for the fall choir concert and/or the spring musical production. Dues range from $60-$70 per month and financial assistance is available.
