Places to See in Evergreen, Bailey, Conifer!

By Julie Dikken, Publisher of Evergreen.Macaronikid.com and Arvada.Macaronikid.com February 7, 2021

Macaroni Kid is on a mission to help support our favorite Evergreen, Bailey & Conifer area non-profit organizations. We especially want to highlight the museums and organizations that help families in our community to learn about the rich history of the Evergreen, Bailey, Conifer area. This week we are excited to highlight the Conifer Historical Society and share with you their plans for 2021!

The Conifer Historical Society and Museum

The Mission of the Conifer Historical Society and Museum is to share the region’s legacy by collecting, preserving and exhibiting historical and cultural materials. Pre-COVID, this was primarily accomplished through monthly programs, annual free exhibits, and a variety of community and educational outreach opportunities.

2021 Programs and Plans

  • Free Lending Library: The Conifer Historical Society and Museum houses a Free Lending Library that was completed in December 2020. This library has a wonderful selection of local history and rare books. This service is available to all in our community and more details are on the website. Click here
  • Self-Guided Family Field Trips: Conifer Historical Society is creating self-guided family field trips for students that follow the Colorado Academic Standards.  The first one was released in November 2020 and is available on the website, or parents may pick up a free copy from the purple box on the porch. It takes students and their families on a tour of historic schools in our area and is geared towards Early Elementary and Mid-Elementary+.
  • Monthly Programs: While regular monthly programs and exhibits at the Little White Schoolhouse have been closed due to COVID safety precautions, they are working hard to design and publish free online programming and content for the community. New ideas for programs:
    • local barn history
    • local restaurant history
    • adjusting some of our 1920s programming we had planned for 2020 into virtual platforms
    • looking to bring back some of our popular programs and put them in an online format, for example: regularly scheduled online “history chit chats” – informal opportunities to talk about a variety of topics, just for fun!
  • Virtual Tours: Take a guided virtual tour of Conifer!
  • Virtual book club: Our first virtual book club meeting is on 2/7 and it has had a great community response – all spots are already filled!  Once the next book and meeting date are chosen, our website and social media will be updated with that info.
  • Gift Shop: Browse the Conifer Historical Society Gift Shop online, order and pay online, then pick up at the Little White Schoolhouse when order is ready!

Coming Soon to Conifer Historical Society!

  • Elementary Education Programming (“The Traveling Trunk”) is sadly canceled for the year - we usually spend time at some of our local schools with 2nd and 5th grade classes. That down time won’t be wasted though!  We have a couple of new board members that are really excited about designing educational programming for middle schoolers and high schoolers, which is awesome! We want to create ways to bring history to life for them just like we do with the younger kiddos.
  • Facilities: Our Facilities Committee is working on finishing up our new exhibit space in the Historic Barn on the property - it’s the large building behind the schoolhouse. Once we return to our “new normal” post-COVID, we are excited to use this space for exhibits of things like antique tools, a Doctor’s Buggy (donated to CHSM by the Norm Meyer Sr. Family), and more!
  • In-Person Programming: And of course, we are excited for when we can return to in-person programming!
