Together We Are Bold and Courageous!

Journeys Program at Evergreen Country Day School

By Christine Vinarcsik with Evergreen Country Day School March 5, 2020

The great outdoors provides a perfect context for all students to learn both how to survive and to thrive along life’s path. Children of all ages benefit from exposure to nature and all the life lessons it offers. Through Evergreen Country Day School’s outdoor Journeys program, children develop their inner character and work on personal grit. Emphasis is placed on specific learning tasks, all wrapped into expeditionary fun:

  • Teamwork established through setting up and packing up the campsites/cabins/huts, washing dishes, preparing meals, and learning about safety
  • Increased stamina learned through hiking, snowshoeing, skiing, sledding, rafting, kayaking and horseback riding
  • Examples of some of our Journeys trips:  kindergarten camping trip, cabin trips in grades 1-2, hut trips begin in 3rd and 4th grade, and hiking 14'ers are offered in 5th-8th grade.
  • Expeditionary learning with an emotional intelligence emphasis
  • Moving from a “me” orientation to a “we” orientation
  • Intentional reflection into every journey whether keeping a journal or sharing an experience
  • Strengthening relationships with peers and mentors on every journey
  • Character development, fostering courage and sparking creativity
