Ice Castles is an awe-inspiring, must-see winter phenomenon that brings fairytales to life. The frozen attraction is located in six cities across North America and is coming back to Dillon in late December or early January (depending on weather).

The experience is built entirely by hand using hundreds of thousands of icicles hand-placed by professional ice artists. The castles include breathtaking LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels, slides, and fountains.

Fun facts - and why this is a NOT TO MISS event!

  • Process: Each ice castle is built by hand and takes thousands of man-hours to create. The daily process consists of growing 5,000 to 12,000 icicles that are harvested by handand individually sculpted into existing ice formations. Newly placed icicles are thendrenched with water. The blend of icicle placement, temperatures, water volume andwind result in an astonishing and ever-changing variety of ice formations.
  • The towering, walk-through structures are made entirely of ice.
  • Each castle is approximately one acre in size and takes approximately two months to construct.
  • The construction team consists of 20-40 ice artisans.
  • Each castle weighs more than 25 million pounds.
  • LED lights frozen inside the ice light up and twinkle to music adding a magical ambiance to the breathtaking interactive sculptures.
  • All of our Ice Castles are located next to a natural water source so all of our water returns directly into the environment to be used again by wildlife, people and plants.

Once you have made plans to visit - you will need to be prepared! Here are tips and amazing photos from our local pro, Nicole Hoeper, Publisher of ColoradoSpringsMacaroniKid.com

Tips for a successful trip:

  1. Wear layers including thick socks, snow pants & boots (or good shoes). Snow will likely go into your shoes if they are low-cut. It can be deep in some places.
  2. Plan to visit as the sun goes down so you can see the castles in the daylight and when the lights come on.
  3. Try out the slides and tunnels. Even as an adult, they add more fun to your adventure.
  4. If you book tickets for weekend, make sure to stay for one of the fire twirlers shows. They do several per evening and are very entertaining.
  5. Dillon is only about an hour from the Evergreen area. You can make it a day trip or extend the fun by staying overnight at a local hotel.
  6. Smile and have fun! It's contagious (even when you have teenagers).
  7. Take pictures! You'll want to look back on the memories you've made.
