Macaroni Kid Featured Mom: Beth Bunchman

Lead by Example: Normalizing Self-Care for the Wellbeing of the Family

By Beth Bunchman, Intuitive Energy Healer & Life Alchemy Coach November 8, 2018

As parents, particularly mothers, it can often feel like our needs come last, and we even willingly put ourselves in that position with the best of intentions. But consider for a moment if that is actually true…

What if it was actually your duty to put yourself first to set an example for your kids?

What if you really became a “better” - more compassionate, fun, and present - parent by attending to your own needs first?

What if you truly stepped into your power as a leader, teacher and mentor for your kids by giving yourself permission to be your most authentic and divine self?

How would that feel for you? What would that mean for your life? How would that impact your entire family?

Well, it’s 100% all true.

It is your duty as a human, especially as a mother, to step into your power and live from your heart and soul.

Pretty empowering stuff, right? But, how does a mom in the trenches of martyrdom make a shift like that?

If nothing else, do it FOR your kids!

I’d love to instill in you the desire to do this just for your own wellbeing, but that might take some time (more on that below!). So, for now, do it for your kids. Take care of you and your own needs just a little bit more so that you show up more calm, patient, and loving in your everyday interactions with your children.

Then, take it a step further and let your kids see you struggle. We have become so infected with the need to be perfected that we often forget our kids need to see that sometimes life is about: facing hardship, experiencing grief, dealing with frustration, and other harsh realities of life. When we only show up with our happy mask on, our kids never learn that it is okay, and normal even, to have feelings that aren’t always happy and perfect. When they see us go through tough stuff, feel into it, strategize our way though it, and come out the other side stronger, we help them realize that their tough stuff too will pass.

Second, let them see you nourish yourself. We often disappear: to the gym (or basement) to exercise, when we engage in our hobbies (if we even have any left), or if we do anything else restorative like meditation, journaling, mindful breathing, or stretching. And our words and actions around nutrition and fitness are often laced with self-hatred instead of self-love. Instead, make your self-care efforts about nurturing your divine vessel so it can sustain you through the tough stuff in life - and then let your kids see you practicing reflection, self-care, and self-love so that these activities become normalized in their own minds as something real people (that they know, love, and trust) actually do.

Don’t forget to welcome your children to join you in these activities periodically. It is crucial to our own wellbeing that we have some time alone to engage in these activities, so don’t discount your need for that space, but also bring your kids into the fold when you can. Helping them experience different forms of self-care will not only teach them how to deal with their own tough emotions and how to create coping skills, but it will also ensure these tools are second nature for them when they are grown.

And, last but not least, talk to your kids. When you are learning about a new tool, discuss the pros and cons, get their feedback, and ask if they have other ideas – kids are so much more creative than adults! Let them see that it is ok to consider the merits of new ideas, adopt some, and leave the rest without harm or judgment. This will also make it more likely they talk to you about other things when they get older!

Hopefully this article has inspired you to do something more to take care of yourself this week. If you aren’t sure where to start, are still struggling with giving yourself permission to start, or if you just want more support along the way, I’d love to take some of the guesswork out of your journey. Please join me for a free group energy healing next week! On Wednesday, November 14th at 1pm I will be guiding women just like you through a quick energetic process to:

  • Normalize mind, body, and spirit care for total wellbeing
  • Give ourselves permission to meet our own needs without guilt
  • Release the stigma around mental health suffering
  • Establish boundaries and routines to maximize the rewards
  • And anything else the participants desire to release or receive!

Wait! What is an energy healing? And how do I know if I need it?
I realize I made a bit of jump there, so let me backtrack just a bit. My name is Beth and I am a Life Alchemy Coach and Intuitive Energy Healer – which is just a really fancy way of saying: I help women who are experiencing a spiritual awakening create a life that feels empowering and fulfilling. This is accomplished through supportive coaching methods and specialized energetic practices.

If you aren’t familiar with coaching, it’s like a cross between talk therapy and coffee with a trusted friend. I will support you and guide you through a series of lessons and experiences in order to help you find your personal mix of self-care routines and rituals for living a happy, healthy and fulfilled life.

Energy work, on the other hand, is the “secret sauce” that makes working with me faster and more sustainable than other types of gurus. You see, in addition to having a physical body and a mental “body” you also have an energetic body. Your energetic body is your life force or soul and is the home of your core beliefs, including your limiting beliefs and false beliefs. Energy work (also known as energy healing or light work) is the act of tapping in to that energetic information for the purposes of providing understanding or relief. In my work, energy healing is used to gain understanding of a person on a much deeper level in order to create a more soul-based strategy for transformation as well as to release the person from anything that might be holding them back in life.

If you’d like to take advantage of this {FREE} opportunity to test out energy work, release some of your own karmic garbage, and receive a more abundant and empowered outlook on your life, sign up here for more details!
