Tree cutting has been a long time tradition in our family. Every year since before our kids were born we have headed to the forest in search for the perfect Christmas Tree.  Permits are required to participate in this fun family event and although many areas may have already sold out,  Macaroni Kid EBC has the scoop on a few options still available in case want to cut your own tree.
  • Christmas Tree Cutting Event ~ Bailey: Fitzsimmons Sea Camp Students are holding a tree cutting fundraiser on Saturday, November 24th. Cut your own for tree for a suggested donation of $25 . Also available, lunch, hot cocoa, wreaths and photos. For more information go to
  • The South Park Ranger District still has permits for sale. The cost is $20 per tree per permit (max 5 permits per family). For more information visit South Park Ranger District Holiday Tree Cutting Program.
    • FREE Pass to 4th Graders! Cutting your own Christmas/Holiday tree can be an enjoyable experience for the entire family. Terms and conditions for cutting Christmas trees will be given to you when you purchase your permit.
Every Kid in a Park initiative is offering one free Holiday Tree permit to fourth-graders that have a valid 4th Grade Interagency Pass. These free Holiday Tree permits are only available at U.S. Forest Service District offices.
Permits become available in the fall and may be purchased at any ranger district office. Select each office to find out more about Christmas tree permits in the area below.
Over the years our tree cutting excursions have evolved into an all day event, complete with tailgating and s'mores over the campfire. Here are some tips that can help make your trip fun for all ages. Check with local authorities to be sure it is okay to light a camp fire! Right now there is a burn ban.
  • Pack lots of warm layers ~ bring extra socks and shoes to change into for the ride home. Hand warmers are nice to have too.
  • Bring sleds ~ can be helpful to pull the tree back to the car and fun for the kids to play while the adults enjoy the campfire.
  • Head up hill to look for your tree ~ it is a lot easier to drag the tree down back to the car.
  • Bring a camera ~ our tree hunt pictures often become our family Holiday card picture. It also fun to see how the kids grow every year.
  • Pack blankets to cuddle up with by the fire.
  • Don't forget rope to tie your tree to the truck or car.
  • For tips on cutting your tree visit South Park Ranger District Holiday Tree Cutting Program.
  • Check with local authorities before you go to be sure there isn't a burn ban in effect.
