285 Winterfest History ~ Mount Lugo Ski Area, Located at Meyer Ranch

a Not-To-Miss Community Event | 285 Winterfest and Mt. Lugo Luge 2/29/20

By With the help of Melissa Baker of Gerou and Associates February 23, 2020

Long ago, Meyer Ranch in Conifer was home to Mount Lugo ski area. 173 acres of skiing was developed by a man named Covert Hopkins and was accessible via a 1200-foot rope tow system that provided (a whopping) 150 feet of vertical drop. The ski area opened for the the winter of 1940 and operated through the 1942 season.

A horse drawn sleigh carried skiers from the road to the ski area which sat high on the north face of Mount Legault. In the mid 40's timber was cleared to create the bowl shaped ski area. The area featured a rustic frame shelter at the base of the run and included wood stoves for cooking and heating. Mount Lugo was forced to close in 1942 due to the result of gas rationing during World War II.

Today, ski runs can be seen on the north slope of Lugo Mountain as a rectangular area of aspen trees, surrounded by evergreen trees. Remnants of the tow's motor can be seen while hiking Old Ski Run Trail at Meyer Ranch.
