Healthy Alternative to the Sports Beverage

By Julie Dikken, Pulisher Macaroni Kid Evergreen, Bailey & Conifer April 24, 2014
If your kids are like mine, they would drink gallons of that chemically filled, artificially colored sports beverage that is designed to rehydrate them and replace electrolytes. I am committed to keep our family on a healthier path for 2014, so I found a way to replace that odd colored beverage with something that is better for them. Guess what? They actually like it!

Homemade Sports Beverage
2 cups crushed ice
2 cups coconut water
1/2 cup all natural juice (I used Black Cherry)
1/2 lemon, juiced
1/8 tsp sea salt
Sweetener to taste (honey, stevia or agave work great)

Place crushed ice in a container with a lid (I used a mason jar) Add coconut water, juice, lemon juice, and sea salt. Place lid securely and shake well. Add sweetener to taste. Serve cold. Makes about 4-5 servings

This drink can be made to taste. One of my kids prefers it as is, the other likes it better with 1/4 c water added to her serving. Try it with your kid's favorite fruit juices.
