Tips for Choosing The Best Day Camp for Your Child

By Sponsored Article by Victoria Lierheimer at Evergreen Academy April 24, 2014
Summer is right around the corner, and there are an amazing collection of camps in the mountain area! Generally, camps fall into two categories: sleep-away camps, where children can spend anywhere from a long weekend to two weeks away from home, and day camps, which can last anywhere from four hours to the entire day.

Day Camps are best suited for kids that you think might not be ready to ‘take the plunge’ away from home.  When looking for a good day camp, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Consider Expectations- Talk with your child about the summer. They’ve been working hard in school all year, and are likely looking for a break. What would be fun? To try something new? Or a camp that’s full of familiar interests
  • Interests: If your child’s favorite activity is to sit in the sun with his sketchbook and markers, soccer camp isn’t likely to be a very fun week. Run through the choices with your child, and pick out a balance of old and new things to investigate.
  • Camp Composition- Many public rec centers and tax supported entities offer camps for children ages 5-12. At Evergreen Academy, we think this approach leaves something to be desired. This is an age spread that includes kindergarteners all the way up to middle schoolers.

At Evergreen Academy, we offer themed camps designed specifically for the primary age grade school child. Children ages five through eight learn about topics each week such as “Big and Wild- Large Predators” , and “What’s A Food Web to Me?”

Children in this narrower age span have similar interests and values, as well as academic skills. At EA, we have a different theme each week, and wonderful academic skill practice. Book clubs, spelling bees and math contests keep academic skills sharp all summer.

With some intention and deliberation, summer can be a wonderful time of discovery!
