First and foremost, fitness benefits you.  You will feel better, think more clearly and have more energy. To get started, here are a few suggestions.

  1. Make fitness a priority, if only for 15-30 minutes a day.  You can make time and exercise when you are watching TV, waiting for someone or during the time you are “just relaxing”.
  2. Look forward to your workout (play time).  We know that when we look forward to something our adrenaline starts to flow and we are apt to put more effort into the activity.
  3. Focus on short term goals.  No need to become the greatest athlete in the world (unless you want to).  Focus on what you would like to be able to do better.
  4. Keep Track of the exercise(s) you do.  Whether you write it down or commit it to memory, this will help you track your improvements rather than wondering about your progress.
  5. Keep Track of what you eat.  What you eat and when you eat it is very important.  Eating poorly or not eating at all will make you feel weak during your workout and can have huge negative effects.  Improper nutrition will cause you to feel discouraged and make you want to quit early or completely.
  6. Make a note of your POSITIVE feelings about exercise.  This keeps you in the game.  Just like playing golf, the good shots keep you coming back.
It helps to think of all the positive aspects of getting better and improving your fitness level.  Getting fit the right way may help you lower blood pressure, reverse type 2 diabetes, lower bad cholesterol levels, eliminate chronic pain, strengthen your immune system and allow you to feel the effects of increased strength and stamina.
When you begin, do what you feel you can do with just slight discomfort.  Do not go for the home run in one day, which will lead to negative effects and discouragement.  Just like any activity you participate in, the better you become at something the more enjoyable it will be.

If you don’t know what to do, ask your friends and family what they do for exercise or find a Personal Trainer to get you started.  Another avenue is to go to a gym that will guide you in your quest to get fit.  Workout videos and books can be helpful, but remember the videos and books cannot see or interact with you to be sure of your techniques or intensity levels.

The more efficient you are with your workouts and nutrition, the sooner positive results will occur.  If you live the life of exercise and activity it will become who you are, not just something you do.  Good Luck and get started today!
